What is Pilates?Pilates is a unique method of body conditioning, consisting of low impact movements to help build core strength, flexibility, balance, improve coordination and postural alignment with a strong focus on breath work.

Is Pilates like Yoga?Pilates like Yoga IS utilizing your body weight on the mat, sometimes practiced in a group and effective in improving flexibility. Pilates INSTEAD also uses equipment and put stability before mobility.

Is Pilates like Personal Training?Pilates IS offering one-on-one attention utilizing a variety of equipment and modalities and custom designed, but INSTEAD has a dedicated studio space where we work on discrete, ordered series of exercises. Pilates is corrective exercises rather than just getting in shape.

Who can do Pilates?Almost anyone can do Pilates. Our clients include people with variety of Orthopaedic and Medical issues as well as athletes and range in age from 12 to 85 years. Pilates may also be beneficial for several conditions including Scoliosis, Fibromyalgia, MS, pelvic floor atrophy and back pain.

Can you do Pilates with an Injury?Pilates is a great to tool to assist or even enhance a Physiotherapy program when you’re recovering from an injury.

Can Pilates ease Chronic back pain?With your doctor’s consent you should be able to do Pilates. Since Pilates is gentle, low impact, and works with controlled and fluid movements, most clients tolerate the workout well and have seen significant improvement in their pain levels. Our instructors will design your program around your limitations.

How often should I practice Pilates?You can practice as often as you want, depending on your lifestyle. In general, you can do Pilates one or two times a week to supplement other exercise and reap a cross-training benefit.

Do you work up a sweat during Pilates?Exercises in your Pilates routine look simple but require precision and control. You focus on breath as well. Since Pilates is not aerobic, you might not always work up a sweat. You need to concentrate on movements rather than constantly moving to build up a sweat.

What should I wear?Your Pilates clothes should be non-restrictive and breathable, accommodating for all folds, bends, tucks and stretches you’ll be performing in your workout. You may want to avoid something too loose at the bottom as you’ll spend a lot of time with your legs in the air, so you might end up flashing a few people. If you don’t feel like going barefoot, a pair of grip socks wouldn’t go amiss.

Will Pilates help with weight loss?Combining Pilates with other forms of cardio exercise and strength training, and eating a healthy diet, is an effective way to tone your muscles and help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Can you practice Pilates during pregnancy?If you have practiced Pilates since before your pregnancy, it might be safe to continue the exercise at a low-level intensity. It is important to check with your Medical Practitioner. There are special programs available specifically for pregnant women.

Can Pilates help with falls and balance issues?Pilates exercises often incorporate elements of balance, coordination, strength, stability and mobility in sitting, standing and prone positions, all of which is important movement skills to keep practising as you age to prevent falls.

What happens when I go on holiday?No problem, please inform your instructor in advance when you’ll be away or unable to attend and you will be invoiced accordingly. A retainer will be required for a period longer that 30 days if you wish to secure your timeslot for your return.

Do I sign a contract?No, we do not lock you into contract. We do however ask for a months’ notice if you will not be continuing so we are able to fill your timeslot.

Can I claim from my Medical Aid?Unfortunately, not. But Discovery Vitality Members can earn 100 points per session.
